UTOPIA PARKWAY
NEW YORK CITY
Transforming a derelict stretch of asphalt into a revitalized shared street and esplanade along Long Island Sound.
ARCHITECT / URBAN DESIGN / STREETSCAPE
The final 2000 feet segment of Utopia Parkway from Cross Island Parkway to its dead end at 12th Road has two primary sections: the first, along Little Bay, suffers from a deteriorating seawall and undermined roadbed. The second, along Little Bay Park currently has an overbuilt roadway with excessive stretches of pavement and underbuilt pedestrian infrastructure, presenting a safety issue and an acute need for redesign.
As part of an extensive transformation of the corridor, OFTN created a road diet plan to reduce paved surfaces by 40%, simplify traffic circulation and minimize conflicts by converting sections of Cryders Lane and Utopia Parkway to one-way, reduce heat island effect by dramatically increasing the tree canopy, and creating a new entrance plaza for the park to accommodate a Veterans Memorial art installation. The new seawall is designed to protect the neighborhood from sea level rise, and is integrated with a new pedestrian friendly esplanade.
