THROGS NECK BRIDGE
NEW YORK CITY
Design-Build services for protective upgrades to the TNB towers
ARCHITECT / VISUAL QUALITY PLAN
The Throgs Neck Bridge is a 2,910 foot long suspension bridge that connects Queens and the Bronx over the Long Island Sound. In 2024, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York initiated a design-build effort to implement a series of upgrades to the structure, including lighting replacement and new fendering for each tower structure. The new reinforcements for the towers will provide increased safety and longevity, protecting them from vessel impacts as well as integrating a new mooring platform for fire/rescue boats, and adding a standpipe system to support fire protection across the bridge. The design build effort utilizes precast concrete, minimizing in-water construction. As Architect for the project, OFTN developed the Visual Quality Plan, spatializing and illustrating the engineering design approach.
