EAST SIDE COASTAL RESILIENCY

NEW YORK CITY

2.3 miles of urban coastline, raised and redesigned to protect NYC’s Lower East Side and East Village

ARCHITECT OF RECORD / INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN / CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION

Scheduled to complete construction in 2026, this section of New York City’s waterfront will be the first major resiliency project to be implemented in the Northeast US. The over-arching goal of the ESCR project is to reduce flood risk for 100,000 residents on Manhattan’s East Side, but to implement it in a way that fundamentally integrates civic infrastructure with social needs and high quality urban design.  Flood protection elements including walls, levees, and closure structures are envisioned as thoughtfully designed features that heighten the quality of life, enrich urban experiences, and dramatically integrate existing conditions and proposed landscapes along the waterfront.
