DEP INTERCEPTOR GATE BUILDING III @ BROOKLYN BRIDGE

NEW YORK CITY

Defining and extending a new model for stormwater management architecture in NYC.

ARCHITECT

From Beaux-Arts pump houses of the late 19th century to modern water treatment plants, New York City has a rich and varied history of water management architecture. As the city adapts to climate change and builds flood defense compartments, the sewer system must be isolated using underground gates. The NYC Interceptor Gate Building is a new building type that facilitates this operation.

Located in the public right of way, these buildings must be designed in a way that fits within the existing context while also sharing a common architectural language. Reflecting on New York City’s centuries-old water management infrastructure, the desire for transparency, and the need for durability, these buildings will be constructed of solid glass brick. Currently under construction, the buildings represent a first-of-their-kind architectural project in NYC, and will be the model for such structures going forward.
