BROOKLYN BRIDGE MONTGOMERY COASTAL RESILIENCY
NEW YORK CITY
1 mile of coastal flood protection threaded beneath the FDR viaduct, designed to protect NYC’s Two Bridges neighborhood from the next superstorm
ARCHITECT OF RECORD / INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN / CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION
The first phase of the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) initiative, Brooklyn Bridge – Montgomery Coastal Resiliency (BMCR) is an integrated coastal-flood-risk mitigation project for the Two Bridges neighborhood in Lower Manhattan. The one-mile compartment will reduce the risk of flooding due to coastal storms and 2050’s sea-level rise while preserving waterfront views and access. This project will protect thousands of residents, including many living in affordable housing, with a combination of fixed and deployable flood-protection elements. The deployable elements, consisting of flip-up and roller-type gates, will be permanent infrastructure, to be stored in discrete locations and deployed ahead of a storm event. The location of the flood walls and posts was determined to minimize conflict with subsurface infrastructure and to maximize integration with existing waterfront uses such as open-air seating, fitness, and athletic courts. In addition to the flood protection system, the project includes improvements to sewer infrastructure, cycling infrastructure, and public park amenities.
